St. Paul’s have a prefect system for many years. All of the prefects come from 6th year, and their election process is by nomination, first from their peers and then by staff members.

Candidates need to have certain qualities in order to qualify as a prefect. These qualities are numerous and vary from responsible, reliable, punctual, trustworthy, articulate and influential in upholding rules and standards in the school to being a good listener and to be able to take on leadership. If a candidate is seen to have these qualities by the staff then they are deemed to be elected.

Prefects get involved in many areas in school life e.g.. monitoring the corridors at breaktime, helping with the tuck-shop, attending parent/teacher meetings and open nights where they prepare and serve refreshments and act as ambassadors for the school. In addition they get actively involved in fund raising activities where funds go to benefiting the students needs in the school.

There is a lot to gain for students themselves if they are elected as a prefect. They learn to build self confidence and self esteem, they develop leadership skills and it gives students the opportunity to experience team work and helps them to develop a sense of pride in their school. Students find that being a prefect and part of a team is a most rewarding experience overall.
